5,172 motorcyclists died in crashes in 2017, according to statistics from the federal government. In 2016, motorcycle accidents per mile traveled were 28 times more than car crashes.
Of all those accidents included in the statistics, the common cause of death among motorcyclists was a severe head injury. Hence, the U.S. government estimates that helmets are 37% effective in preventing motorcycle deaths and 67% effective in preventing brain injuries.
Even with those shocking statistics, however, only 19 states and the District of Colombia required the use of helmet among motorists.
